Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987, at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York, by four trailblazing Latinas.

Our Founding Mothers, Cynthia Santiago, Adriana Zamora, Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quiñones, and Carol Elizabeth Torres, sought to create an organization that would not only serve as a voice for women in an academic setting but would also provide sincere sisterhood and unconditional support. This would be accomplished while actively promoting academic achievement, service to the community, and cultural enrichment, the leading goals of our sorority.

In the Fall of 2012, twelve dedicated and motivated young women founded the Alpha Pi Chapter at Georgia State University.

These twelve women felt their campus was in need of an organization that would serve as a positive role model for the Latinx community. Not only did they want to create a positive image for Latinxs, but they also wanted to create an atmosphere that provided a strong sisterhood for women of diverse backgrounds.

These ideals of sisterhood and change led them to find a chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Incorporated on their campus. The sorority’s ideals, goals, and mission embodied all that they were looking for as Latinas and as a result, these twelve women knew they had the potential of changing the norm amongst all women. Due to their commitment and diligence, their vision became a reality and the Alpha Pi chapter was established.
